Dropped Ceiling

Wood, Ceiling Tile, Fluorescent Light, Speakers, Amplifier, Wire Hangers, Fiberglass Insulation

Dropped Ceiling is a multimedia sculpture that is suspended from the ceiling for an audience to observe from below. Walking under the piece exposes the viewer to a fluorescent light and the sound of dissonant “muzak” played from the piece’s two speakers. The effect is a discomfort from both the viewer’s tilted neck and the fluorescent light they’re forced to endure should they choose to submerge themselves beneath the Dropped Ceiling. The music is from William Basinski’s Disintegration Loops, an hour long recording of a musical tone repeating through a reel to reel player until the tape physically disintegrates never to be played again.
